Yoga means "union", in a traditional sense, this means union with God, or the Divine source of our Being. This definition rests upon the assumption that the seeker is one who believes in the Divine. It does not necessarily mean that one must believe in "God", it is about meaning or purpose. Yoga is about union with source. Yoga is a spiritual path that can carry one, through one's efforts and sacrifice, toward unification with ALL that there is is. It is an immersion in everything, Oneness. A process of awakening. In this brief reflection, I offer insights I have discovered while embarking on a path of awakening through yoga practice. First let me address the question of awakening. What does it mean to be awakened in the context of this discussion?

Awakening is being present. Presence refers to the innate capacity to live in the present moment without mind chatter focused on past experience or future projection. How does yoga enhance this? As I have come to realize, yoga promotes presence through awareness of the breath and body. Both the breath and body are primarily rooted to the present moment. Think about it, have you ever experiencing breathing actually re-occuring from the past, or have you taken a "future breath"? This sounds strange to even think about. Surely we can imagine breathing in the past or future, but this is not the embodied act itself.

Yoga brings us in touch with our body, which act as vessels for the soul in this life. The breath is the body's primary need and source of life. Thus the soul is united with the body through providing the life force for which we act with intention. While often acting with intention can become lost or silenced behind the busy chatter of the mind. Yoga, like meditation, is an uncovering process which will bring to the surface whatever is there to be discovered and healed.

In addition to being an immense source of healing and unification with the Divine. Yoga can be a beautiful art, as demonstrated in the Jivamukti Yoga performance shown here.

Give yoga a try and allow yourself the freedom to practice in a gentle way without self judgment or attachment to outcomes.

Namaste.
